Minecraft works just fine right out of the box, but tweaking and extending the game with mods can radically change the experience. Some mods are great for brand new players and seasoned veterans alike, while others are aimed squarely at breathing new life into the game after you have already seen everything that the basic game has to offer.
Whether you’re brand new to Minecraft, or you’re just new to modding, we’ve put together a list of the Best of Best Minecraft Mods in 2020 that improve graphics or performance, add useful functionality, and open up brand new worlds to explore.
These mods work regardless of the platform you’re using, so you can safely grab them whether you’re playing on Windows, OS X/Mac OS, or Linux. However, they only work with Minecraft: Java Edition. If you’re playing a version of the game like Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition, or any console or mobile version, you have to buy skins, modpacks, and other content from the in-game store.
This is a pretty simple mod, but it makes mining ore and other more rare material a lot easier. If you find yourself a vein of something like iron, coal, Redstone, or whatever you can bind a key and hold it down and mine one of the ore as normal. Once you break it, the whole vein will be mined so you don’t have to mine each part separately! This is a great way to save some time on your mining, so you aren’t spending too much of your game-breaking each block individually.
If you like engineering and crafting machines in virtual worlds be sure to check Mekanism, an interesting mod that adds various machines to the game. It has four tiers of machines, depending on their complexity. Players can upgrade their tiers and create more complex machines over time, as they learn new recipes, gather the right resources, and advance through the game.
There are factories to build, various gear to produce, automation of the mining process, and all sorts of systems that allow for the machines to function such as power sources and the whole power infrastructure. Think of it as some sort of Satisfactory, but in Minecraft. Oh, and you get a cute robot pet called Robot, who follows you around and collect item drops.
SECRET ROOMS MOD
This is a really interesting mod that will allow you to camouflage everything in your world with special blocks. You can hide valuable items, add hidden doors, pressure plates, levers and more! There’s also something called a Ghost Block. This block looks like whichever block you destroy with it, but you can walk right through it. This leads to a whole lot of potential for hidden traps and areas you might want to hide!
Hyper HD Realism texture mod
In order to install texture packs, you have to download MCPatcher and let the app learn How to Install Minecraft location. Many texture packs come with HD images and MCPatcher allows Minecraft to work with those enabled.
Improved lighting mods work best with HD texture mods that, when combined, take Minecraft to the next level, at least when it comes to the game’s visuals. The most popular (and most stable) HD texture mod is called Hyper Realism texture mod for Minecraft and it drastically improves the quality of textures (which is pretty low in the vanilla game).
This texture pack doesn’t change the overall look and feel of the game, it only takes vanilla textures and makes them sharper and the result is surprisingly good, especially when combined with a shader mod.
